You May Need a CDL
You will find it necessary to have a Texas commercial driver's license, if you want to operate a Class A, B, or C commercial vehicle. Endorsements will also be needed for double/triple trailers, tanker vehicles, passenger vehicles, and vehicles placarded for hazardous materials. To operate a commercial vehicle in one of the following categories, you must have a CDL endorsement:
- Class A License - This type is needed to operate combination vehicles with a Gross Combination Weight Rating (GCWR) exceeding 26,000 pounds, but only if the Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) of the vehicle being towed is more than 10,000 pounds.
- Class B License - This type is needed for single or combination vehicles where the GVWR of the single vehicle exceeds 26,000 pounds. The vehicle in tow cannot exceed 10,000 pounds.
- Class C License - This type is needed to operate a vehicle designed to transport 16 or more passengers, including the driver, and vehicles placarded for hazardous materials that don't meet the qualifications of the above categories.
CDL Skills Test
If you pass the knowledge test, then you'll be ready to take the skills test. This test will consist of you being judged on the following: pre-trip inspection, basic vehicle control, and on-road driving. You will have to take these tests in the type of vehicle in which you want to be licensed to drive.
- Pre-Trip Vehicle Inspection - It's vital to make sure your vehicle is safe to drive. Not only will you have to conduct an inspection, you will have to report your actions and findings to the examiner.
- Basic Vehicle Control - You must now how to control the vehicle. Therefore, you will be tested to see if you can move the vehicle forward, backward, and turn it within a defined area.
- On-Road Test - You will need to be able to safely drive the vehicle in a range of traffic situations, including: left and right turns, intersections, railway crossings, and more.

Other requirements that must be met to obtain a commercial driver's license include the following: passing a physical examination every two years, having good hearing and vision, and not being colorblind.
Items for the DMV
When going to the local DMV, make sure you have the following documents: proof of identity, proof of social security number, proof of Texas vehicle registration and liability insurance (if you own the vehicle), and consent to be photographed and fingerprinted. You will also have to give your signature.
