You Need a CDL If . . .
In the State of Missouri, you'll need a Missouri commercial driver's license to legally operate a Class A, B, or C commercial vehicle. You will need to gain specific endorsements if you plan on operating double/triple trailers, tanker vehicles, passenger vehicles, and vehicles placarded for hazardous materials. You will need to obtain a Missouri CDL Endorsement to operate a commercial vehicle in the following classifications:
- Class A License - This license will allow you to operate a combination vehicle with a Gross Combination Weight (GCWR) exceeding 26,000 pounds, but only if the Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) of the vehicle being towed exceeds 10,000 pounds.
- Class B License - This license will allow you to operate a single or combination vehicle where the GVWR of the single vehicle exceeds 26,000 pounds. However, the vehicle in tow must not exceed 10,000 pounds.
- Class C License - This license will allow you to operate a vehicle designed to transport 16 or more passengers, including the driver, as well as vehicles placarded for hazardous materials.
CDL Skills Test
A variety of skills will be tested, including: pre-trip inspection, basic vehicle control, and on-road driving. However, before you can take a skills test, you'll need to successfully pass a knowledge test. When the time comes to take the skills test, you must do so in the type of vehicle for which you wish to be licensed.
- Pre-Trip Vehicle Inspection - Can you tell if the vehicle is safe to drive? During this test, you will be asked to inspect the vehicle, as well as provide an explanation as to what and why you're inspecting something.
- Basic Vehicle Control - Can you properly control the vehicle? You will have to move the vehicle forward, backward, and turn it within a defined area.
- On-Road Test - It's important to be able to safely drive in different traffic situations. The situations you'll be tested on include: railway crossings, curves, up and down grades, and more.
Further CDL Requirements
Before you can obtain a CDL, there are further requirements you will have to meet. You will have to pass a physical examination every two years. You must have good hearing, 20/40 vision with or without glasses or corrective lenses, and a 70-degree field of vision in each eye. Also, drivers must not be colorblind.
Going to the DMV
When you go to the DMV, make sure you have the appropriate documents. You will need the following items: your current driver's license, Department of Transportation Physical Examination Form, and your social security card.
